Celebrating Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti 2025: A Legacy of Valor, Wisdom, and Leadership:

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti is celebrated every year on 19 February which marks the birth anniversary of one of the greatest and progressive rulers of India. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who was the founder of the Maratha Empire, was a clever military strategist and administrator. He won victories in many battles against the Mughals. He was given the title of “Chhatrapati” (Emperor) in 1674 and he became the epitome of valor, leadership, and bravery. His great war plans and progressive rule have become immortal in the history of India. The principles of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s life and his words, which were based on justice, courage, and leadership, still inspire us. His birth anniversary is celebrated with great pomp in Maharashtra, but his influence and legacy are felt across the country. This year, in 2025, the 395th birth anniversary of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is being celebrated. Shiv Jayanti is one such day when we acknowledge his legacy and courage.

Early Life of Shivaji Maharaj:

Shivaji Maharaj was born to Shahaji Bhosale, a Maratha general, and Jijabai, a strong and intelligent woman, who played an important role in shaping his character and leadership. Shivaji Maharaj started gaining knowledge of valor, war policy, and principles of patriotism from a very young age. His mother, Jijabai, inspired him with stories of Hindu kings, warriors, and their battles for freedom, which helped him determine the goal of his life.

Shivaji Maharaj’s military training began under the tutelage of his mother and specialized teachers. He was trained in administration, governance, military planning, and war fields, where he achieved mastery in both traditional and extraordinary warfare techniques. His sharp intelligence and war planning made him prominent as a young leader.

By the time he was a teenager, Shivaji Maharaj had turned his military dreams into reality. In 1645, at the age of 15, he captured his first fort, Torna, when he defeated the army of Bijapur. This was an important event that marked the beginning of his military life and gave him the opportunity to emerge as a great warrior.

Key Achievements of Shivaji Maharaj:

  1. Founding of the Maratha Empire : Shivaji Maharaj is best known for establishing the Maratha Empire in the 17th century. Over time, he developed war strategies, and guerrilla warfare techniques, and forged strong alliances in his region. By the time he was crowned in 1674, he had established a strong and progressive empire that extended from the western coast of India to the central and southern regions.
  2. Crowning as Chhatrapati : One of the most important moments in Shivaji Maharaj’s life was his coronation as “Chhatrapati” (emperor), which took place on 6 June 1674 at Raigad Fort. This event was a symbol of the official establishment of the Maratha Empire and the recognition of Shivaji Maharaj as an independent ruler. His coronation reflected his loyalty to his people and his vision of an independent and prosperous Maratha state, which would be independent from Mughal rule.
  3. Military Genius and Guerrilla Warfare : Shivaji Maharaj was a military genius who changed the way warfare was conducted in India with his new war strategies. He developed and improved guerrilla warfare, which was based on surprise attacks, moving fast, and taking advantage of one’s own territory. His small but extremely skilled army fought successfully against large enemy armies like the Mughals, using hit-and-run plans, tactics, and fast-moving soldiers. His army was also famous for its discipline, loyalty, and good morals, where soldiers were inspired by the leadership of Shivaji Maharaj and their loyalty towards their future. He built a strong naval force to protect the western part of India so that the Marathas could protect their empire from foreign invaders, especially the Portuguese and the Mughals.
  4. Naval Power and Coastal Defense : Shivaji Maharaj was a visionary and far-sighted ruler who created a strong naval force for his army, which was an essential part of his defense policy. In 1666, he created a naval force to protect the Maratha tribes from the growing influence of the Portuguese and the Mughals. He established a strong naval base in Sindhudurg and developed a naval force that was capable of both defending and attacking the western tribes of India. Shivaji Maharaj’s efforts at Nausena secured important trade routes and protected the maritime assets of the Maratha Empire. His focus on the defense of Nausena became an important factor in the success and expansion of the empire.
